What is a 'Crane Owner'?A Crane Business Owner is where they own the plant and equipment. They have the responsibility to ensure the crane is safe for operation and does not pose a risk to any persons in the workplace.
They also have a responsibility for working with crane users to plan this work, ensuring the crane, operators and dogmen remain safe at all times. |
What is a 'Crane User'?A Crane User is someone who hires and lease cranes. They have the ultimate responsibility for ensuring the workforce operates safely, within the Worksafe NZ guidelines.

What is a 'Crane Operator'?A Crane Operator, operates the crane. You are a vital link to safe, accident free crane and lifting operations.
You are responsible for the safe operation of the lift plan within the workplace. They carry out regular checks of the crane, to ensure that it is kept in a safe operating condition. They record and report all defects / faults as per company procedure. You hold the appropriate qualification for this role. |
What is a 'Lift Plan'?
This details how to carry out simple or regular crane lifts. The lift plan is usually developed by the lift team or similarly competent people.
Lift plans may be used as an addition to, or as an alternative to Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Safe Method Statement for lifting. |
What qualification do I need to become a crane operator?
Cranes are dynamic machines. They demand and deserve respect and safety consciousness with their use.

What is a 'Crane Dogman'?
The Crane Dogman / or Rigger sling the load and direct the crane operator. Your actions are key to keeping the team safe.
They are responsible for ensuring the load is rigged correctly and that the lift is moved safely within the workplace. |
